The Free Folk
A silent voice would drift through the fae wood and as the darkness of the abyss stirs, something would awaken to maintain a balance that should never be broken.
She goes by many names: Gaia, Mother nature, Spirit and she exists in many realms. - but in truth there is no distinction of gender, no personifying of the essence that flows through all things that live.
Whilst the darkness pushes back, the light would push stronger in a never ending battle that had ensued since the dawn of time. But who would be there to oversee this balance? - For good could not exist without evil nor evil without good - and too much of either would destroy the brittle web that connects all life together.
From humble beginnings would the forest gain it's own protection. Neither good nor evil, or perhaps the perfect balance of both would heed to this silent calling. And not only inhabitants of it's own realm might hear her, but travellers from far away who also share a kinship with nature.
This rag tag group would come together as free folk who do not wish to be governed by the same laws of the city - obeying only nature's common law. However, they were not all simple folk and some might express a curiosity in many parts of the world beyond the forest whilst maintaining caution towards any danger that might destroy the vital connection between all things organic.
It would not be immediately obvious the parts that she had called them here to play as they would strive to survive in a realm where civilisation was on the verge of a technological revolution and the darkness of the abyss had began to seep its way into the roots of the dark forest as its wrath spread above ground.
Their immediate focus would be gathering and utilising what nature gifts them, stocking up on food for both survival and a form of trade between the City forging connections and gathering information in the process.
