Homunculi...A homunculus is an artificial life form created through alchemy. Where golems and automatons are an imitation of life, homunculi are a replication -- they breathe, they bleed, they eat, they sleep, they think. However, they are still artificial, and do not age and cannot reproduce. Many are created in the image of the race of the alchemist who created them, but it's not unheard-of for a homunculus's creator to give them unnatural skin colors or demonic features, or create a dog/human hybrid, or other more exotic possibilities. Nevertheless, there is usually some clearly-visible indicator as to the homunculus's artificial nature, such as bolts sticking out of their neck, or alchemically-shaped stonework grafted onto their body. General Lifespan A homunculus lives the same length the alchemical process which sustains them, essentially as-long as it has maintenance it will live. Maintenance can involve consuming a potion, or may require something else. Strengths/Abilities Depending on how they were created, a homunculus might excel at one or two attributes or abilities. A relatively common ability is a preternatural talent for alchemy. They also almost always have at least one attribute or capability which is severely lacking. Like other artificial beings, homunculi generally don't concern themselves with existentialism, because they know exactly where they came from and why they're here. The flipside of that is that homunculi are usually created to have a blindly-unwavering devotion to whoever created them, which can have mixed results for all concerned. Weaknesses ... |
